I received an e mail from Steve Camp expressing his disappointment in my presentation of his perspectives on cultural engagement. He stated he felt I was misrepresenting him in my article Steve Camp thinks I am Misreading his Mind.

This is my response.

Okay, Steve!

I have links to your articles in the blog so my readers can read your material and judge for themselves whether or not I am representing your views accurately.

Please forgive me, though, where I did not get it right.

To make amends, you can provide me a summary of the key points you are making and I will post it in its entirety on my blog. that way my audience can see if first hand.

Also, you are free to take me to task, however, you see fit on what I have said.

I think that dialogue would be healthy for both of us.

I appreciate the passion with which you write.

I too am passionate about proving the gospel by demonstrating it so we can recommend it with integrity. Your work with AIDS victims, the poor in Africa or the pro life movement is one form of embodying the gospel. Another form of embodying the gospel is to live what you believe where you work that is why I advocate faith at work. Another form is to stand for office because of what you believe so that you can have an influence on your society.

A Christian leader in Canada (my home country) has said that the CanadianChurch has been in an organized retreat from culture for the past 25 years. Now we are one of only four countries in the world to legalize same sex marriage. (for an up to date perspective on this issue visit DefendMARRIAGE Coalition) We have the homosexual lobby filing lawsuits against clergy for speaking out against homosexuality. We have gay advocacy groups using humans rights tribunals to force schools to teach the homosexual lifestyle to primary school children.

So I think both the message and the messenger lack integrity if they disengage from the culture (including politics), retreat within their cultural Christian ghetto, hurl stones at those outside and wait for the rapture. This is why the church in Canada is seen to be irrelevant.

For far too long the prophetic voice of church has been silenced. Now is the time for us to engage the Powers with the gospel. To do that we need to embody the gospel in action and get involved with cultural engagement. If that means Christians standing for election on a platform that advocates strengthening the moral values of our society that is a good thing! So I thank God for the Christian leaders (like James Dobson) and Christian events like Justice Sunday (sponsored by the Family Research Council) that I see doing something about what is happening in your culture. I just wish there were more like them in my country.

NOTE: Steve replied stating he appreciated my offer.
