Giants in the land! Giants in the land! This is the thinking that prevented the Israelites from entering the promised land and it surfaces whenever a business leadership team is about to make a risky decision. Surprises materialize out of nowhere. A bad report is heard. Players unexpectedly drop out of the picture. The ugly face of financial uncertainty rears its head. The giants of Fear and Doubt pervade the meeting. What are we to do?
This is the question I faced this morning as I participated in a team meeting to lease a large facility for a company I consult with, a lease that would add significant costs to their overhead. All the due diligence had been done. All the costs were laid out, financial statements reviewed, sales forecasts consulted. The decision hinged on the CEO.
After he reviewed the facts and shared his feelings, he looked to his faith saying, "Only God knows the future, so let us pray!"
"Grant us wisdom, Oh Lord! Help us today! You know our intentions are good. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
Faith at work is about more than involving God in our story at the point of maximum uncertainty, It is about believing God is involving us in His story. My friend, the CEO, knows God has a plan for this company. He sees God at work in the lives of his employees everyday. God called Him to start the company. God has provided every step of the way and the bottom line for this CEO is -- God is faithful!
There will always be giants, real or imagined. But if we are like young David in his confrontation with Goliath, we know God's story and we know He is faithful and that He has already provided the skill we need to slay the beasts that challenge us. So, what's one more giant along the way? Thus my friend the CEO led us in prayer, committed his company, his employees and his future to the Faithful One and took the plunge.
This is faith at work in the real world of risk in the marketplace slaying the giants of Fear and Doubt. Sure, their will be those who will second guess his decision and perhaps it will not work out exactly the way he had planned it would. Regardless of what may come, his faith will carry him through because he trusts in the One who has always proved Himself faithful.
