Charlie Peacocke, song writer and Christian music producer for several generations of Christian musical artists, has written a provocative book entitled “New Way to be Human.” You can find the first chapter here. He ends that chapter with these words from Anne Lamott: “Jesus, he’s all I’m really sure of.”[1]

This quote came to mind as I was posting a comment to Open Source theology in reply to an article entitled, “Could you say the Apostolic Creed with conviction? Someone had asked the question if it really matters to our faith whether or not the historical details of the creeds are true.

As I was pondering the answer, I heard the chorus from a Brian Doerksen song, “Your Faithfulness.” You can find the moving story that gave rise to this song here.

The Chorus goes like this:

Certain as the rivers reach the sea

certain as the sunrise in the east

I can rest in Your faithfulness

Surer than a mother’s tender love

surer than the stars still shine above

I can rest in Your faithfulness

It really does matter that our faith is grounded in history because the gospel and the rise of Christianity is a testament to God’s faithfulness.

Long ago God called a man named Abraham to leave his land and his people and follow God to a new land. He promised Abraham that he would bless him and his offspring and through Abraham he would bless the nations (Genesis 12:1-3).

History has proven God faithful to that promise. As Anne Lamott knows, Jesus is God’s “surety.” As Brian Doerksen’s knows, life is uncertain, but God’s faithfulness is the one thing we can count on.

That is a comforting thought as we find ourselves adrift in a postmodern sea of uncertainty and angst.

So as we come to Easter, remembering the crucifixion and rejoicing in the resurrection, let us celebrate the surety of God’s faithfulness to us, Jesus Christ. “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why we utter the Amen through him, to the glory of God (2 Corinthians 1:20).
