I posed a question at Steve Camp’s Weblog concerning Article XVI of the Together for the Gospel Statement (See my previous post Together for the Gospel or Together in the Twilight Zone? for the text & Links)

Deo Volente prepared an in depth response to my question - Together for the Gospel Article XVI and My Opinion. The author is a woman who supports the position that women are to be excluded from pulpit ministry. She provides several links to discussions about the Scriptural basis for this position.

I think this is a question that Bible believing Christians can legitimately disagree on. I support the ministry of women in the pulpit and I take issue with interpretations of the Bible that would deny them that role.

In response, here is an article by Cannon Theologian N T Wright that provides a thorough exegetical discussion of the passages used by Deo Volente. Wright provides an alternative reading of those passages that would support a more “egalitarian” view of a women’s role in ministry. See Women’s Service in the Church: The Biblical Basis by N.T. Wright.

Also, I discovered a web log that tells the story of a great Brethren Bible teacher who was a woman. You can read about it here. Suzanne's Bookshelf: Eva McCarthy.

This story is one of many stories of Christian women who braved a male dominated world to do exploits for Christ. Catherine Booth also comes to mind. She was a fiery preacher and evangelist and had a significant role in the development of the Salvation Army.

Finally, I recommend a book on the subject entitled Why not Women? Biblical study about women in missions, ministry and leadership by Loren Cunningham and David Hamilton
