I agree the spatial metaphor is too limited. Rather than thinking of self and then upward, or God and then downward, how about thinking of the story forward and where you are in that story? This is N T Wright’s Fifth Act Hermeneutic. We all have a role to play in God’s transcendent drama. We need to find ourselves in the drama as it is right now and act our characters. For me, part of the drama is being played out a New Life. My role is to engage and be a positive character for change and growth. Where has God called you and what is your role?
